Monasticism fueled city growth where Western Europe organized its most influential religious networks along the northern Mediterranean coast. Monasteries acted as major hubs of economic activity, learning, and culture: they owned large estates, supported crafts and markets, kept records, welcomed pilgrims and travelers, and provided services like education and hospitality. This concentration of activity around monastery sites drew people to live and trade nearby, creating or accelerating urban settlement and the development of towns into recognizable medieval cities. The northern Mediterranean region—encompassing parts of Italy, southern France, and the Iberian coast—was where these monastic networks most strongly shaped urban life, more so than the southern Mediterranean, the Arctic Circle, or Eastern Europe, where different patterns of urban development were at work.
